Danville CA Faves – Hiking & Recreation - Las Trampas Regional Wilderness
The Las Trampas Regional Wilderness is more than pretty green hillsides visible from San Ramon to Walnut Creek and Moraga. Las Trampas Regional Wilderness is 5,342 acres of parkland, much of it accessible by foot or horseback. Bicycles may be ridden on designated bicycle trails, and on fire or service roads unless otherwise posted.
The expansive trail system of Las Trampas Regional Wilderness appeals to hikers and birdwatchers seeking natural rugged terrain and privacy. Birdwatchers may see many species of hawks and an occasional golden eagle. The views from atop the ridges are breath-taking. It’s possible to see from the Farallones to the Sierra on a clear day. Park visitors should use only signed trails that appear on the map (available online or posted near the main parking lot).
Horseback riders are welcome, but bring plenty of drinking water along for you and your horse as the water supply is inconsistent. Las Trampas Stables offers horse boarding and lessons. Guided trail rides, pony rides and barbecue rides are available with prior reservations at Las Trampas Stables (for a fee).
Two picnic areas, Steelhead and Shady, are located near the main entrance parking lot. The main entrance to Las Trampas can be reached from the southern end of Bollinger Canyon Road in San Ramon. It’s also possible to enter the park from the east side at Remington Loop in Danville or Starview Drive in Danville.
